Christchurch is named The Garden City due to the beautiful scenery and gardens it possesses, at all times of the year. The city is populated by approximately 400,000 people and, with the exception of the Peninsula areas, is entirely flat. The city sites are even more spectacular when viewed from above: in an aeroplane, balloon, helicopter or hanglide ride. The beautiful Avon River runs through the
city and Hagley Park, crossed by many bridges, & the Port Hills form a pleasant backdrop.

The layout of the city, and tall standing Cathedral in the Central Square is said to be reminiscent of old England, and this is extended through the atmosphere and feeling of Christchurch city.
The grid pattern of the streets centres on Cathedral Square, where buskers, speakers and the eccentric 'Wizard of Christchurch' may be seen and heard. Culture and entertainment are well provided for in the city, which prides itself on its arts, sports, culture
